She was able to come up with new ways to grow indigo, andbefore long, indigo became the second-largest crop in her home state of South California. She was so brilliant that George Washington himself acted as the pallbearer at her funeral!

She was also the first business woman to introduce eye makeupto American women and pioneered the creation of “makeovers.”

Today, her brand is owned by Revlon and is considered one ofthe best beauty brands in the world. She was also known for being a“suffragette” and protested for women’s rights.

But evenafter she married a wealthy merchant named Pieter de Vries, she continuedworking. This time she opened her own business and after her husband passed away, she took over his business. She expanded it. She sold small goods like cooking oil to the colonists, and bought furs to send to Holland.

It wasn’tuncommon for women to do business in the Netherlands even during that time.Female entrepreneurs were known as “she-merchants.” When she passed away in 1691, she was the wealthiest she-merchant in New York.
